My Story

Childhood

I was born in Kimberley, BC, a small town in south-west Canada. At 4 years old, I moved to Africa with my family, where we lived for two years. My parents later took me travelling to Europe, Central America, and the Philippines. As a kid, I hated travelling. All I wanted to do was play video games with my friends. Now that I'm older, I wish I could re-live the time I spent travelling. The experiences I had around the world made me the person I am today.

Education

The transition into Canadian schools was difficult because I wasn't like all the other kids. I tried to make friends by messing around and making jokes during class. My inappropriate comedy soon became an issue. By grade 10, I had been suspended many times, and my friends were no better. The only part of school I enjoyed was art class. My brother graduated with plans to become an engineer, which inspired me to follow in his footsteps. I graduated with straight A's and thousands of dollars in scholarship money, which I used to pay for my first year of engineering at the College of the Rockies. I transferred to UBCO, where I am completing my degree in mechanical engineering. Unlike my time travelling the world, I learned to be engaged in school, which allowed me to learn and grow from the experience.

Future

I hope I can use my position of privilege to help future generations. I plan to do this by working in the field of medical technology. I am passionate about using technology to help people.

I will continue to paint and draw in my spare time, although I won't ever pursue art as a career. I have a home studio where I make music, and I regularly perform live around the Okanogan.

I still wish I could re-live my time travelling with a new perspective, but now I realize that I had to learn from my past to enjoy every moment in the present.
